Best Abaya Fabric for Every Season: Crepe, Nida, Velvet Compared

Eight fabrics cover most abayas worn in Qatar. Each drapes, creases and handles the heat in its own way. Choose by the day ahead: a work week in August, a winter majlis or a wedding night.

Crepe: the everyday standard

Crepe has a fine, grainy surface made by twisted yarns. It hangs straight, holds a cut without stiffness and hides small creases, which is why so many black abayas use it. Weights run from light summer crepes to heavier ones with enough body for tailored cuts. A good crepe looks matte and even in daylight.

Nida: light and soft

Nida is a smooth, matte, lightweight fabric that Gulf abaya makers have used for years. It falls in soft folds, so it suits flowing and flared cuts. It creases little, dries fast and packs well for travel. Shops sell names such as Korean nida; the label tells you where the cloth comes from, and your hand tells you its weight.

Chiffon and georgette: sheer layers

Chiffon is sheer and floats. Abaya makers use it for outer layers over an opaque base, for sleeves and for shaylas. Georgette is its grainier, heavier cousin and drapes with more weight. Both snag on rings and bag zips, so keep them for evenings and occasions rather than a working week.

Satin: shine for evenings

Satin has a glossy face that catches light, which makes it an evening and Eid fabric. It shows water marks and creases more than matte cloth, so iron it on the reverse through a pressing cloth. A satin trim or inner panel gives shine in small doses on a matte abaya.

Lace: detail at the edges

Lace is openwork, so abaya makers place it where it reads as detail: the neckline, the cuffs, the waist. Novella 008 carries lace along the neckline and cuffs, and 006 at the waist and cuffs of a blazer collar. Lace catches on jewellery and needs a laundry bag or a hand wash.

Jacquard: pattern woven in

Jacquard carries its pattern in the weave, so the design belongs to the cloth instead of sitting on top as a print. It has body, holds a structured shape and reads formal. It suits blazer and coat abayas in the cooler months, and it needs little embellishment on top.

Velvet: the winter evening fabric

Velvet has a short, dense pile that makes black look deeper than a flat weave can. It is warm and heavy, so in Qatar it belongs to evenings from December to February. Gulf fashion coverage in 2026 put velvet at the centre of the season, often with floral embroidery. Steam velvet; pressing it flat crushes the pile.

Linen: summer daytime

Linen breathes and softens with every wash, which makes it a daytime summer choice. It creases within minutes of sitting. For some women the creases are part of its look; for others they rule it out of the office. A linen blend keeps much of the breathability and fewer of the creases.

Questions on this topic

What is the best abaya fabric for Qatar's summer?

Light crepe and nida suit daily wear through the summer: they are light, stay opaque and keep their shape through a long day in the car and the office. Linen breathes more but creases fast. Leave velvet and heavy jacquard in the wardrobe from May to September.

What is the difference between nida and crepe?

Nida is lighter and softer, with a smooth matte face that falls in loose folds. Crepe has a grainy texture and a little more weight, so it holds a tailored line better. Choose nida for flowing and flared cuts, and crepe for structured cuts such as blazer abayas.

Which abaya fabric creases least?

Nida and most crepes recover from sitting and driving with few marks. Satin and linen show creases the most. If you spend hours in the car or at a desk, choose a matte, medium-weight fabric and hang the abaya as soon as you get home.

Which fabrics do Novella abayas use?

Each Novella product page describes the design and its details, such as the lace on 006 and 008 or the textured fabric with metallic florals on 004. For the base fabric of any design, ask the team on WhatsApp before you order.
